If you have inverted or flat nipples, our nipple formers can prepare them for breastfeeding and help your baby latch on.

Medela Nipple Formers are a non-invasive way to help women with inverted or flat nipples breastfeed comfortably and successfully.

Breastfeeding with inverted or flat nipples - If you have inverted or flat nipples, breastfeeding can be more challenging, but it's certainly not impossible! Some babies may have difficulty latching on to flat nipples, causing nipple pain. Additionally, an inverted or flat nipple may not reach the roof of your baby's mouth, which means the sucking reflex may not be triggered. But remember, many women with these types of nipples have no problems breastfeeding at all. In fact, you may find that as your breasts change during pregnancy, your nipples become more prominent anyway. However, if this is not the case, you may want to try nipple formers.
How do Medela nipple formers work? - Nipple formers apply gentle pressure to the areola (the darker-colored circle of skin around the nipple), which can help gradually shape a flat or inverted nipple.
When can I start using nipple shields? - You can start using nipple shields during pregnancy, from about 32 weeks. However, if you have a medical condition known as an incompetent (weakened) cervix or have been told that your baby was born prematurely, talk to your healthcare professional before using nipple shields, as nipple stimulation can cause contractions. Start by using nipple shields for one hour a day and gradually increase to about eight hours a day. If necessary, you can continue to use them after your baby is born, between feeds (for 30 minutes to an hour before feeding). However, avoid using them at night, to prevent the development of sensitive nipples.
